Sunglasses – Fashion & Function

When choosing sunglasses, consider:

UV Protection

It is recommended that eyes of all ages are protected from UV radiation and sunglasses are one of the most effective tools in protecting our eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is beyond the visible spectrum of light, and its effect is not felt until later on. UV-A and UV-B rays are especially harmful, contributing to a number of issues with the eyes:

  • Cataracts
  • Pinguecula
  • Cancer
  • Macular Degeneration

The eyelids provide some protection to the eyes in the closed state. However, the tissue of the eyelid is incredibly thin, and is susceptible to developing skin cancers. The cornea and lens do filter UV rays; however, over time UV exposure contributes to damage of these structures. UV radiation is one of the contributing factors to cataract progression.

Coverage Area

Large sunglasses are in. They are trendy and stylish, and also have a health benefit. The larger the sunglass is in size, the larger the area of UV protection.

Polarized VS. Non Polarized

Polarized lenses work by selectively allowing a particular orientation of light thru. This effects all wavelengths of light, and its greatest benefit would be a dramatic reduction in glare. Polarized lenses are especially useful for water sports, snow sports, driving, and sensitivity to glare.

Polarized colour include:

  • Grey
  • Brown
  • Green

Lens Tints & Colours

Another customization available for sunglasses would be the tint of the lens. Many colours are available, coming in different intensities. Each tint colour acts as a colour filter, which may accent certain colours in the visual world. This filtering affect can be implemented in activities such as golf. Other applications include reducing eyestrain especially when an eye health issue is present.
